Great Tips For Taking Care Of Your Cat

Cats, like most pets, require plenty of responsible care. Grooming a cat is quite different than grooming a dog, however. You need to brush them, but not bathe them often. Read on to find more things cat owners should know.

If you have drape cords in your home, keep them away from your cats. If the cat becomes caught in a loop, they could choke to death. This could cause injury or death. Secure your cords so they are out of the way and out of sight.

For a healthier, happier cat choose plain litter over scented litter. Cats like nice, clean, clumping cat litter. Scoop your cats litter box daily and change it completely every three days or so. When you change the box, wash it out with water and dish soap. Dont waste your money on liners as cats tend to destroy them.

Cats can be great pets for children, but some younger children may be a bit too rough with cats. Teach your kid how to properly handle a cat. Show them how to gently pick kitty up and what kinds of activities are appropriate. Because cats are more delicate than dogs, they need to be handled more carefully.

Exercise

Cats love to play so make sure that you provide them with lots of toys. Cats enjoy batting around a fake mouse or little ball around the room. Some cats even develop a favorite toy. Playing with your cat is not only fun, it helps them to get exercise too.

A great toy for your cat is a laser pointer. Cats love to chase the laser around and try to catch it. This will help you give your cat some exercise, while your cat is having fun at the same time. It will also help to fine-tune their hunting skills.

Keep your cat amused. Cats need play and exercise like other pets. The unfortunate thing is that many owners of cats dont realize this. A bored cat may fall victim to depression, compulsive disorders or issued that can be harmful to their health. Give them enough space to exercise in, with fun toys to keep them entertained. Indoor cats will be happier if you provide them with climbing resources and practical things such as scratching posts.

Nutrition

Choose a high quality food. The key to a healthy cat starts with nutrition. Take a look at the ingredients label. If you look at most "popular" commercial cat foods, you may be surprised to see the top ingredient listed is corn. Cats are carnivores, so look for a food with a real meat as the top ingredient. You may pay more up front, but these foods are often more nutritionally dense, meaning your cat eats less and the bag lasts longer.

Although depicted in countless movies and cartoons, milk is not the best source of nutrition for your cat. Once cats have grown, they do not need milk as a regular part of their diet. Milk can cause stomach distress and bloating. Instead of giving your cat milk, always have fresh, clean water available to them instead.

You cat should get cat food that is of a good quality. Pay attention to the ingredient list on any food you feed them. Protein needs to be one of the very first items on the list, while fillers like corn and other grains should be avoided. Stay way from cat foods made of corn or any other ingredients that arent based in protein. Because cats are carnivores, their diet need only consist of a good source of protein.

A well groomed cat will look and feel wonderful. It is up to you to provide the proper care for your pet. The cat will love any grooming you do. Use this article, and groom your cat on a regular basis.
